Man In Stolen U-Haul Tracked Down After Stealing Items From New Canaan Business, Police Say

A man driving a stolen U-Haul who allegedly robbed a local business was tracked down at a gas station in New Canaan, police said.

Investigators from the New Canaan Police Department received a report on Monday, Aug. 5 from employees of a Grove Street business who said a man - later identified as Hoyt Moyles - who was acting suspiciously. The suspect allegedly took several items from the business without permission and took off in a U-Haul.

The employees were able to provide investigators with a photograph of the vehicle and the license plate. A check of the plate determined that the U-Haul had been reported stolen out of Manchester.

According to police, investigating officers subsequently located Moyles and the stolen U-Haul truck at the Gulf Station on South Avenue. Moyles was uncooperative with officers and offered several different names when they attempted to ascertain his identity.

Moyles, 59, of Wallingford, was arrested and charged with fifth-degree larceny, second-degree larceny, and interfering with police officers or resisting arrest. He was held in lieu of $15,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Aug. 6 to respond to the charges.
